7 rules to follow while eating sprouts
Sprouts are packed with nutrients but need careful handling to ensure safety and maximise their benefits. Follow these seven essential rules to enjoy sprouts safely and healthily.
Where possible, know the source of the sprouts. Organic and locally sourced options are often safer and fresher.
All utensils and surfaces should be cleaned before sprouts are handled for preventing cross-contamination.
Use clean and safe drinking water to soak and rinse your sprouts. If the tap water is hard or heavily chlorinated,it should be filtered before consumption or must be boiled before it’s safe to drink.
Before soaking them, rinse the seeds well. After soaking, rinse and drain the sprouts well every 12 hours at least twice a day. In summer, or in hotter regions, rinse every 6 hours.
Soak in ample room temperature water in a bowl for atleast 6 hours to (ideally) overnight. Different seeds often sprout at different times, so it’s advisable to keep them separate.
Sprouts must always be checked before they can be consumed. Any lot that may have become discolored or features a bad smell should be discarded.
