Animals that are considered to be sacred and holy across cultures
Since time immemorial, animals have been considered sacred and holy, and each animal has had a certain deity they were connected to or a quality for which they were worshipped and respected.
One of the most sacred animals for Hindus across the world is the cow. They are a symbol of purity, nurturing nature, and are respected like mothers. It is also believed that Gods reside within the cows.
In many South Asian cultures, elephants are considered to be sacred and are loved and respected just like a family member. Many believe them to be a part of Lord Ganesha, other cultures see them as a symbol of grandeur, and in some others, they are considered protectors.
While this might sound shocking, the feared and dangerous snakes are also considered sacred and holy in some cultures. Snakes are respected and considered holy in Hindu, Egyptian, Buddhist, and some other cultures.
Cats, the everyday animals that humans have always considered beloved pets, are also considered holy and sacred in certain cultures. In ancient Egypt for example, the cat was a protector and a symbol of good fortune.
Peacocks, one of the most colourful, beautiful, and regal-looking animals in the wild, are also considered sacred and holy in certain cultures. In Greek beliefs, for example, the Peacock was a sacred bird to Hera, the Queen Goddess.
