Lesser-known side effects of consuming too many flax seeds

Flax seeds, often considered a superfood, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, and antioxidants. Although they provide a lot of health benefits, excessive consumption or improper use can lead to unwanted side effects.

Flaxseeds are rich in fibre; an excessive intake will result in bloating, gas, or diarrhoea if the person is not used to a diet of such high fibre content. This would therefore require moderation to not cause gastrointestinal upset.

Flaxseeds contain lignans, and phytoestrogens that mimic the body's estrogens. High intakes might disrupt hormonal balance, at least in susceptible individuals, those with hormone-sensitive conditions like PCOS or estrogen-dependent cancers.

The omega-3 fatty acids in flax seeds can act as natural blood thinners. This can be a problem for people on anticoagulant drugs or people with bleeding disorders, since it may cause excessive bleeding.

Though it is rare, some may have allergic reactions to flax seeds, which manifest in symptoms such as itching, swelling, or even difficulty breathing. If this happens, discontinue and consult a doctor.

Flax seeds contain goitrogens that could inhibit the production of thyroid hormones. Patients who are iodine deficient or already suffering from thyroid diseases should exercise extreme caution when taking flax seeds.

Flax seeds contain fibres, which can help in reducing blood sugar levels. For most people, this is good news, but diabetics or those on medication for sugar control, need to regulate their intake to avoid hypoglycemia.
